LAMP Alumna Amna Yaqub - MD Candidate, Business in Medicine
Tuesday, March 30, 2021
In today’s alumni feature, we introduce you to Amna Yaqub (2020; Biochemistry BS)! Yaqub is originally from Westfield, IN, and was torn between science and business when she arrived at IU. She discovered LAMP in her freshman year when shadowing a LAMP student at Hutton Honors College, and decided to pursue a Biochemistry degree, a Biotechnology minor, and the LAMP honors certificate.
Today, Yaqub is a medical student at the IU School of Medicine in Indianapolis. While she is not yet sure which medical specialty she will end up in, she plans to incorporate business in her career by doing a scholarly concentration in Business in Medicine, and hopes to work in healthcare administration. Yaqub expressed that “many feel that there should be more physicians involved in healthcare management because right now, many leaders in that field [only] studied business. Sometimes it’s hard for them to make the best decisions when they aren’t directly involved with patient care.” Though the COVID-19 pandemic has prevented her from many in-personal hospital programs and classes, Yaqub volunteers as a vaccine administrator and is involved in AMWA.
Yaqub explained that along with business knowledge, LAMP has given her the skills to properly communicate and collaborate with people from many different fields and backgrounds. Her advice to current and upcoming LAMP students is to “explore your interests now while you have the opportunity, and don’t be afraid to try classes outside of your major.” She also encourages students to study abroad if possible, as her public health study abroad program really enriched her college experience.
Thank you, Amna, for sharing with us! We love to hear from our alumni about their post-undergraduate experiences. We invite LAMP alumni of all ages to fill out our Stay in Touch form on the LAMP website.
